Holzgitterschale Teil 1

Grid shells are the most efficient structures in architecture. They can span huge distances, whilst adaptable to nearly any shape, with a minimum use of material. They can be so efficient, they can be even lighter than their enclosed air.
Without technical aid, planning is demanding, which is why only few projects have been realized. But this changes rapidly with the digitization.
In contrast, the construction of a grid shell made of wood is fast and easy. The grids are assembled on the ground and then slid in position. So far, due to the large radii of curvature of the wood of r = 3.4m, spans from 11m were realized. The largest structure of this type is the multi-purpose hall in Mannheim, which was planned 40 years ago by Frei Otto, and has a wingspan of 60 x 80m.
